COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Through local donors, private foundations, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, and the County of Mathews, we are able to provide quality art instruction to those in our community who may not receive or be financially able to receive the opportunity to engage in art instruction any other way. We are lucky to have partnered with many organizations who value the ability of art to enhance one's quality of life and self-esteem.

Twice a month we work with residents and consumers of the Riverside Convalescent Center - Mathews, Sanders Assisted Living, Brambles Adult Day Support, Urbanna Adult Day Support, Lewis B. Puller Center, The Laurel Shelter (home for abused women and their children).  We also offer art lessons to Mathews Head Start, Kingston Parish Pre-School, Mathews Boys and Girls Club and Special Education Classes at the Mathews Public Schools.

Other Outreach....

Every summer during the 1st full week of August, we hold a "Free Week of Art", which is funded by a yearly yard sale and sponsored by the Mathews Woman's Club.  We also hold a Family Art Day in February where stations are set up and children can visit each one and use a sewing machine, paint, make a necklace and many other creative things!  These are both free to the public.

In October, we work with the Mathews Visitor's Center for the Downtown Trick and Treat for children.  We supply the handled paper bags and decorations and let them decorate their own trick or treat bag.

We offer art lecture series on DVD from The Teaching Company twice a year.  These lectures are from 7:00-9:00pm on Thursdays and last 4-6 weeks.

Every summer we work with the Mathews Memorial Library, 4-H, Boys and Girls Club and the YMCA  - better known as the "Coalition for Kids" - to produce a calendar of children's events for the months of June, July and August.

In addition, different grades from Mathews Public Schools have had extra art instruction to complement their art classes.  We have held a 6th Grade Art Day twice for the 2010-2011 school year.
