The Art Speaks Gallery

The Bay School Community Arts Center in Mathews

Opening Reception – Friday, June 2 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM

Artists & Writers Together:  Painting, Poetry and Prose, will open on Friday, June 2 with a reception from 5:00 – 7:00 PM in the Art Speaks Gallery at The Bay School Community Arts Center in Mathews. The public is invited.  The show will feature original works by members of the Chesapeake Bay Branch of the National League of American Pen Women and will run through June 26.

The members initiated this creative encounter in November 2022 when they each submitted original works of art, poetry or prose.  These works provided the “seeds” to inspire a second collection of original works.  The show will exhibit both the seeds and the works they inspired.  The artists and writers will be at the opening to discuss their works.  Many of the art pieces will be available for purchase.

Established in 1897, the National League of American Pen Women (NLAPW) is one of the oldest arts organizations for women in the United States.  With 135 branches, it forms a large community of professional artists, writers, poets, composers, and arrangers throughout the country.  Some of its notable members include Eudora Welty, Pearl Buck and Eleanor Roosevelt, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Grandma Moses.  The Pen Women mission is to encourage, recognize and promote the production of creative work of professional standard in Art, Letters, and Music.

The Chesapeake Bay Branch has 25 members and encompasses The Northern Neck, the Middle Peninsula, Newport News, West Point and Williamsburg.
