December Artist of the Month Katherine Maloney

Katherine’s ceramic art is inspired by an adoration for the outdoors, instilled during a childhood on her family’s organic farm. Her current work draws on this personal story of belonging to a landscape, while responding to an increasing need for respect and consideration of the environment and the species who are inhabitants. Using porcelain and stoneware, Katherine sculpts animal figures to integrate with vessels and altered forms. Each animal is presented in a position of honor and integrity, aiming to invoke an introspective response while the vessel invites human interaction. Katherine began her ceramic studies at age eleven and continued by completing a B.A degree in 2013 from Guilford College. During a study abroad in Southwest China (2012), Katherine apprenticed with Tibetan Nixi Potter, Sun Nuo QiLing, which greatly influenced her stylistic and technical approach to clay. Since college, Katherine has participated in artist residencies including Starworks Clay Studio in Star, N.C (2016-17) and Peters Valley School of Craft in Layton N.J (2018). Her work has been exhibited throughout the East Coast including at the Smithsonian Craft Show and the Morean Center for Clay. Katherine’s current studio and place of residence is on the family farm in Tidewater VA.
