Artist Martha Anne King first visited the Bay School in the early 2000’s. At that time, she and her husband, Terry, were weekenders, coming to the Rivah every Friday to enjoy their home on Queen’s Creek. A corporate executive with Oracle Computers, Martha Anne was a busy woman and thought Mathews County was the perfect retreat from her frantic life in Northern Virginia. On Saturday afternoons, Martha Anne loved walking around town and it was on one of her strolls down Main Street that she discovered the Bay School.
After retiring and making Mathews her full-time residence in 2007, Martha Anne headed to the Bay School and enrolled in Kathleen Noffsinger’s Beginning Watercolor class. In that class, she fell in love with making art and continued to grow her craft in a variety of media through the years, taking more than 100 classes at the Bay School. In addition, she continued her studies with other instructors, including well-known artists Lisa Boardwine, Sterling Edwards, David Dunlop and acclaimed portrait artist, Mary Whyte.
Martha Anne was a member of the Virginia Watercolor Society, the Rappahannock Art League Art Center, the Portrait Society of America and a contributing artist to the Bay School Community Arts Center in Mathews. She has been juried into numerous East Coast art exhibitions. She was a member of the National League of American Pen Women and Chesapeake Bay Writers. Martha Anne was an avid supporter of the Bay School, serving as a loyal and enthusiastic volunteer for 17 years.
Born in Kansas City, MO and later moving to Alexandria, VA, Martha Anne attended Lynchburg College, graduating with honors in 1968. Following graduation, she was offered a programming position with IBM, which she accepted only after negotiating her salary. Her position at IBM took her to New Jersey where she met her future husband, Terry. In the early 70’s, they moved to the DC area where Martha Anne worked in the federal contracting field at IBM then Oracle until her retirement.
Throughout her life, Martha Anne used her intelligence and imagination to improve our world. In 1974, she instituted a maternity leave policy within her company. She later helped spearhead an initiative for affordable child care, resulting in the SACC program, benefitting thousands of Fairfax County families today.
Martha Anne passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 18, 2020. She was 73 years young. Her strength and courage in the midst of her battle with cancer during the last 2 ½ years was an inspiration. Her enthusiasm, curiosity, humor and joy for life ignited a spark, bringing light to all who knew her.
Martha Anne is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Terence Michael King, two wonderful daughters, Tracey and Virginia, four amazing grandchildren, and many loving friends.
